Caught in the Pages: Why My Love for Reading Lands Me in Good Trouble

Learn to Read Then Read to Learn

Having a book with me at all times is as essential as air for breathing. Reading is a form of learning. When my son was in elementary school, one of his teachers explained that you learn to read until third grade, but for the rest of your life, you read to learn. I continue to learn through my life experiences, my tribe (including my son), my passion for reading, and my travels.

Today, as I finished reading Ina Garten’s “Be Ready When the Luck Happens,” I was introduced to Christian Tortu, a renowned French floral designer from Paris. I am now inspired to take a Masterclass with Mr. Tortu. Do such classes exist? Yes, or not. Below is a link to a 2002 New York Times article about the Paris floral arrangement class. Next, is a link to Flower School New York – just a bit closer than Paris.

This discovery about learning French floral arrangements is just one of the gems I’ve found as I “read to learn.”

My books are an extension of my lifelong desire to learn, grow, and expand my reservoir of knowledge. I find great pleasure in exploring a wide range of topics through reading. Some of the titles on my reading list for 2025 include “The Almanack of Naval Ravikant,” “The Jackal’s Mistress,” “The Beekeeper of Aleppo,” “Broken Money: Why Our Financial System is Failing Us,” “Activate Your Greatness,” and “The Things We Do for Love.” The anticipation of having a new book in my queue excites me. Occasionally, a particular book captivates me so much that I can’t put it down, which can create a significant issue.

Libby App

The Libby app is an excellent option for those looking to access a world of books. It allows readers to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from their local library’s collection right from their devices. To register, you only need a valid library card, which grants you access to many titles. Remember that not every book may be available on Libby, and there can occasionally be a waiting period for popular titles. However, with so many fantastic reads waiting to be discovered, it’s a robust resource that makes exploring new books even more convenient!

Reading is not just a form of entertainment for me; it’s a gateway to discovery and personal growth. Each book opens new worlds, ideas, and perspectives that challenge our thinking and broaden our understanding. Through the characters we meet and our journeys, we gain valuable insights that can inspire change in our lives. Ultimately, the benefits of reading extend far beyond the pages, enriching our minds and enhancing our ability to empathize and connect with others.

Travel and the Literary Experience

Travel transforms the literary experience, allowing me to read books that mirror the landscapes and cultures I encounter. Often, I find myself diving into novels set in the very places I am exploring, creating a unique bond between the fictional world and my reality. Each destination often leads me to a different genre or author, and I relish the anticipation of discovering new narratives that complement my adventures. It’s the perfect way to broaden my horizons—through the stories I absorb and the captivating experiences that travel always brings.
