Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
On our last full-day exploring this beautiful country on the Adriatic Sea, our driver,
Siniša Juzbašić picked us up at 8:00 a.m. for the journey to Plitvice Lakes National Park. On the way, Sinisa shared details about the drive, the park of waterfalls connecting 16 beautiful lakes and the gorgeous vegetation that we were about to discover. Sinisa has a wonderful way of making a long journey become a discovery, full of adventures along the way. Approximately one hour into our journey, we stopped at the town of Skradin, the official entrance to the Krka National Park. Skradin is a beautiful city, over 2000 years old surrounded by lush lavender plants and a charming roadside market -where we found a few treasures to bring home.
Back on the road and approximately two hours later we arrived at the entrance to Plitivice National Park. Sinisa introduced us to our guide and we began the walking tour of this breathtaking vista. By the end of the 2.5 hour tour we learned about the lakes, the rich forest and meadow habitats with the many diverse species of plants and animals. Plitvice was proclaimed a National Park in 1949 – making it one of the oldest of the eight national parks in Croatia.
On our return journey we stopped and purchased smoked cheese from a farmer selling his goods outside of his farmhouse. Our smoked cheese was a great appetizer – holding us over until we reached Restoran Torcida, closer to Split that specialized in lamb. Our meal was worth of five stars: roast lamb, tomato salad, domestic potatoes, homemade bread and house red wine.
