And if you love seafood, this is the perfect destination—freshly caught fish from the nearby waters is served up daily at the famous fish market.
My recent trip to Norway was nothing short of spectacular! Nestled in the heart of this stunning country, Bergen took my breath away with its majestic mountains, lush forests, breathtaking fjords, and captivating coastline.
Opus XVI: Former bank building in Bergen City Center
We stayed at Opus XVI, a remarkable hotel that used to be a bank, right in the city center. I loved the blend of history and modern comfort, especially knowing it is owned by relatives of Edvard Grieg, Norway’s most famous composer. How cool is that? The atmosphere was as rich as the surroundings—truly a fantastic place to call home during my visit. One evening, the bartender made us a Norwegian coffee cocktail called Karsk. It is a traditional drink from Trøndelag, Norway, made with hot coffee, cream, and Akevitt, a Scandinavian spirit flavored with caraway and other spices. As a coffee lover, I usually refrain from mixing alcohol with coffee, but Norway has changed my mind.
Morning Tour of Bergen Wharf
One of the first things we did was join a morning tour through the Bergen Wharf. It was fascinating to stroll along the historic waterfront, where merchants have engaged in the stockfish trade since the Middle Ages. The colorful wooden buildings and the vibrant energy of the area were captivating. I could almost imagine the bustling trade that took place centuries ago!
Why You Must Ride the Fløibanen in Bergen, Norway
Next, we took the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen. The ride was exhilarating, and as we reached the top, the panoramic view of Bergen, the peninsula, and the surrounding landscape left me in awe. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, I felt like I was standing on top of the world. The beauty of this place is truly unforgettable. Meeting a kind fellow traveler on the funicular (by the name of John), we are eternally grateful for the photos he took of us.

To conclude our time in Bergen, we enjoyed an incredible dining experience at Lysverket Restaurant. The emphasis on seasonal ingredients and local flavors made every bite a true celebration of Norwegian cuisine. One of the chefs at Lysverket came to our table and gave us insight into the behind-the-scenes efforts that went into the meals we enjoyed that evening. It’s remarkable how much work goes into preparing a dish for guests. Chefs often go out with fishermen in the early morning hours to ensure that the quality of the seafood is maintained, with the fish being brought onboard just minutes after it is caught. They are also very aware of endangered fish species and refrain from using these in their dishes. This brief glimpse into the effort that goes into creating the food we enjoyed highlights the meticulous attention to detail involved in each dish.
Local Hike and Farm Visit at Ovre Eide Farm
Our final activity while in Bergen was a local hike to Øvre Elde Farm. The hike was an unforgettable experience, covering 8.5 miles of stunning city and mountain landscapes. We trekked through charming streets, past vibrant homes, and into the serene embrace of nature, all leading down to the beautiful farm, which has roots dating back to 1540. The owner and chef at Øvre Elde Farm, a quintessential gentleman, greeted us warmly, assuring us that we were always welcome in Norway. It was here that I tasted Norwegian porridge for the first time, and I was pleasantly surprised by its rich flavors and comforting warmth. The combination of the hike, the breathtaking scenery, and the delightful hospitality made this a memory that will last a lifetime.
