Oslo: Fjords, Flavors & Fascinating Stories

Tucked between deep blue fjords and rolling green hills, Oslo is a city that balances modern cool with centuries of rich history—and to be honest, it surprised me. But before we arrived in Norway’s capital, our journey took us through landscapes that felt lifted from a dream.

Nærøyfjord Fjord Cruise

As we departed Bergen, we drove two scenic hours to the port of Gudvangen, nestled deep in the heart of the fjord country. It was here that we boarded the ferry for the Nærøyfjord Fjord Cruise, one of the most stunning stretches of water I’ve ever experienced. Nærøyfjord is the narrowest and best-known arm of the mighty Sognefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the boat glided quietly through this majestic waterway, we passed hanging valleys, cascading waterfalls, snow-dusted peaks, and tucked-away hamlets, each one a reminder of nature’s scale and serenity.

From the deck, there was a sense of peace that settled in—a stillness that invited awe. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down just long enough for your senses to catch up.

Riding the Flåm Railway: Norway’s Most Scenic and Breathtaking Train

After the cruise, our journey continued to Flåm, a tiny village surrounded by steep mountains, where we stored our bags in lockers at the station (convenient tip!) and prepared for what would become one of the most incredible train rides of my life: the Flåm Railway.

This historic railway descends 2,831 feet from mountain to fjord in just over an hour, and every moment of the ride is filled with jaw-dropping beauty. It took over 20 years to build, carving through rugged terrain with 20 tunnels, some of them hand-dug. One of the most unforgettable moments? A sudden stop at the base of Kjosfossen Waterfall, where mist dances in the air and music echoes off the cliffs as a mythical “huldra” appears—an enchanting nod to Norwegian folklore. It’s hard to describe just how powerful and emotional the experience is; it’s something you feel in your chest.

By late evening, after a day filled with wonder, we arrived in Oslo, the beating heart and capital of Norway. The city greeted us with quiet sophistication and a warm welcome. We checked into Sommerro, a stunning hotel housed in Oslo’s former electrical company—now transformed into a chic, art-filled sanctuary. After a long day of travel, it was the perfect place to unwind.

And then Oslo began to speak

We only had one day in Norway’s capital, but Oslo made a lasting impression. The city carries a calm, modern beauty—clean lines, thoughtful design, and a refreshing sense of ease. But beneath that sleek exterior lies a place rich in story and spirit.

We started our day along the water, admiring the striking Oslo Opera House with its sloped marble roof that invites you to walk right up for panoramic harbor views. Just steps away, we spotted locals soaking in the city’s signature wellness culture—relaxing in floating saunas bobbing gently on the fjord.

Culture runs deep here. At the Henrik Ibsen Museum, we stepped into the playwright’s preserved apartment and learned how his work continues to shape Norwegian identity. At Oslo City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each year, you could feel the gravity of a city that honors voices of peace.

We also carved out time to explore a more stylish side of Oslo, browsing Scandinavian fashion at a small upstairs shopping arcade in Oslo Sentrum. A highlight? Discovering Bitte Kai Rand, a Danish boutique known for timeless, contemporary pieces and warm, kindhearted designers who welcomed us like old friends.

It wasn’t enough time—but maybe that’s the best kind of travel experience. Oslo left us wanting more. We’re already dreaming of coming back to linger longer, explore deeper, and let this quietly magnetic city reveal even more of itself.
