Catena Zapata Winery and its love for Malbec Wine

Catena Zapata Winery is an iconic Argentinian winery that is setting the standard for the finest in quality wines. With a combination of traditional and modern winemaking techniques, their terroir-driven wines are full of complexity and character. The Catena family has a long history in the wine industry, and their commitment to excellence is evident in their handcrafted, award-winning wines.

When we arrived at Catena Zapata for our tour and tasting we were escorted to a lovely living room — a very intimate setting which set the tone for the rest of our day there.  The family winery started with Nicola Catena planting the first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza. The winery remains family owned with Nicholas Catena  Zapata and Dr. Laura Catena, his daughter, at the helm.

Some of my favorite wines during our tasting were: Angelica Zapata Chardonnay, D.V. Catena Malbec and Catena ALTA Chardonnay.

Catena Zapata produces a variety of award-winning wines, each with its own unique flavor and character. The Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the winery’s signature wines, with intense dark fruit flavors and a long, smooth finish. The Catena Alta Chardonnay is a bright, balanced white with a hint of oak and notes of citrus. The Catena Zapata Malbec is a vibrant, full-bodied red with a lush, fruity character. Finally, the Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard Chardonnay is a complex and elegant white with a creamy texture and hints of spice. The winery’s wines are named after prominent members of the Catena Zapata family, honoring their commitment to quality and excellence.

Catena Zapata recently opened a new restaurant at their winery in Mendoza, Argentina.  Angelica Cocina Maestra served us a ten course lunch like a symphony. They paired each course with a respective wine that celebrated the food. It was by far one highlight of my lifetime. The restaurant offers a wide range of traditional Argentinian dishes, with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients.

Nicolas Zapata is a pioneering Argentine winemaker who has significantly contributed to the growth and success of Malbec vines in higher elevations. He has done a lot of research on the subject, and his work has enabled other winemakers to produce higher quality Malbec wines with more intense aromas and flavors. The higher elevation climate provides a more consistent temperature and less extreme weather conditions for these vines, which help to make more complex and interesting wines. Zapata’s work has been instrumental in helping to further the development and success of Malbec in Argentina.
